Sounds like a good idea and it is. I'm sure most have recollection of wetting a line with the Old Man, I know I do. So with a little understand and a kid it's easy.

The attention span of most kids is about a minute, this is a very important factor and you can't change it. This is one reason that surf fishing is the best way to get kids started. Blitzes are rare where a fish can be caught every minute and if they do occure it's not much of a place for a kid, but by being on the beach there are other things for the kids to do. Always take a Frizbe or other beach toys to fill the dead spots when nothing is biting.

A friend of mine once gave me a piece of very good advice to consider when takeing a kid fishing. He said take a rod and snacks and bait and drinks and tackle and snacks and a bucket and drinks and snacks and snacks. Well you get the idea.

Here is where we might disagree, but to me it is important for the kid to do it by them selves. I don't mean you can't help, but let them do all they can. Don't take their rod a cast unless they can't even get it in the water. I resisted the temptation and even with the kids fishing at their feet, the fish they catch is Their Fish.

I aslo feel it is important to get the kid their own rod. They will learn to take care of "Their" rod better than "Your" rod and it keeps them off your good stuff.

Lastly and most important. When you take a young kid fishing they are fishing not you. If you can fish without interfering with the guidence you must give them OK, but your responsibility is to teach fishing not fish.

I have three sons and I rarely fish without at least one of them, it just wouldn't seem right.
