For what it's worth .....
The tradition of celebrating the New Year with loud noises, is truly ancient.
Even before the Chinese started making "firecrackers" with black powder, ... drums were used by early people, to frighten away evil, and thereby bring "good luck" for the coming year.
While the current crop of "anvil shooters" tend to be centered in the South, ... the practice of "shooting the anvil", is not-so-much a "Southern" thing, ... as it is an "Appalachian" thing.
Also, ... the practice is not altogether unknown, ... among the "Pennsylvania Dutch" community, ... but it seems to be more of a "memory" on the part of some "Elders", ... rather than a current practice.
I think I might have also seen a reference to "anvil shooting", in one of the later "FoxFire" publications, ... but I'm not sure of my memory, on that point.
