The North Carolina Speedway in Rockingham will be put up for auction later this year, Speedway Motorsports Inc. confirmed on Thursday.

Jerry Gappens of SMI said the auction should take place sometime in December.

The track has not hosted a NASCAR Nextel Cup race since February 2004.

Speedway Motorsports Inc., whose chairman is Bruton Smith, owns tracks in Concord; Atlanta; Fort Worth, Texas; Bristol, Tenn.; Las Vegas; and Sonoma, Calif.

Dang I feel old....I remember it being built. I went to the first race......

The drag strip, too?

So sad.If NASCAR had given them a better date and teh track had been resurfaced,it could have been almost as famous as Bristol and Dover.
